Thousands of people are out of power across the Charleston area and southern West Virginia as strong winds have downed power lines over a widespread area.
West Virginia had the nation’s highest number of outages by a wide margin early Friday morning, according to PowerOutage.us, a website that tracks power outages nationwide, with over 83,000 outages as of 5:45 a.m. The outage count was higher than those of the next two highest states combined: Pennsylvania (just over 37,000) and Oregon (just under 29,000.)
