More than 1,250 volunteers put on their work gloves Wednesday morning to participate in United Way Central West Virginia‘s annual Day of Caring.
“They help our students buy shoes, beds, clothes — whatever our families need,” said Kim Legg, referring to United Way. “This is the way that we can give back to help them, because they help us so much.”
Legg, who supervises Kanawha County Schools’ social work team, has been coming since the first Day of Caring that is now on its 21st year in central West Virginia.
Day of Caring is a worldwide event created by United Way connecting corporate volunteers to local nonprofits to complete hands-on projects. For volunteers with United Way CWV, that could mean anything from weeding to putting up fall decorations, or even arranging diaper kits for new mothers. Though other chapters in the state participate in the Day of Caring, United Way CWV President Margaret O’Neal said she believes the event is the largest single-day volunteer event in the state.
“There is something special about seeing our orange Day of Caring shirts all across Central West Virginia,” O’Neal said. “They represent people willing to show up, roll up their sleeves and give their time to make their communities stronger.”
