WASHINGTON — Sen. Jim Justice, R-W.Va., has agreed to pay more than $5 million to settle a long-standing federal tax obligation from 2009, according to a filing in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.
Justice and his wife, Cathy, agreed in a motion filed Monday to pay $5,164,739.75, an amount calculated as of Aug. 4, 2025. The judgment also includes statutory interest and other additions that will continue to accrue until the balance is paid in full.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Tax Division filed the complaint at the request of the IRS Chief Counsel, stating the action was brought to collect unpaid federal income tax assessments and statutory additions owed by the Justices.
According to the complaint, the couple received notice and demand for payment but “neglected or refused to make full payment.”
The Justices, identified in the filing as residents of Lewisburg, were assessed for the tax period ending Dec. 31, 2009. The formal assessment date was Nov. 25, 2015.
