LOGAN — The Aracoma Story, Inc. will bring E.B. White’s beloved barnyard tale “Charlotte’s Web” to life this month, staging the show for two weekends at the Liz Spurlock Amphitheater in Chief Logan State Park.
Performances are set for Sept. 10-13 and Sept. 17-20. Tickets are $12 per person.
The production follows Wilbur the pig, Charlotte the spider, young Fern Arable and the scheming rat Templeton through White’s 1952 story of friendship, sacrifice and barnyard mischief — a tale the Children’s Literature Association has ranked as the best American children’s book of the past two centuries.
Stage versions of “Charlotte’s Web” have circulated among schools and community theaters for decades. Playwright Joseph Robinette adapted the novel into a full-length play licensed for production across the U.S. and several other countries, and the work won the Charlotte B. Chorpenning Playwright Award, one of the more prestigious honors in youth theater.
A separate musical version, with a score by “Annie” composer Charles Strouse, premiered at Opera Delaware in 1989 but has mostly been staged in regional and school theaters rather than on Broadway.
The Aracoma Story, Inc. is no stranger to bringing family-friendly productions to the amphitheater. The nonprofit community theater has operated in Logan since 1975, staging its namesake outdoor drama about Shawnee Chief Cornstalk’s daughter, Aracoma, alongside additional plays and musicals each season. The organization bills itself as the longest-running outdoor community theatre in West Virginia.
Organizers describe the “Charlotte’s Web” production as suited for the whole family, with promotional materials promising “a magical theatrical experience” built around the unlikely friendship between a pig and a spider.
