Cuvo Plans on Best Dam Tape Becoming Global Brand
By Jim Workman, West Virginia Sports Writers Association
A West Virginia University senior entrepreneurship student scored an incredible win this September with his sports-related business.
Logan Cuvo, a native of Columbus Ohio, is making a mark in the business world with his “Best Dam Tape” company that won a $40,000 prize for his Top 10 placing at a “Shark Tank”-like creator’s pitch competition in Las Vegas, presented by Alibaba.com.
The cash prize that a panel that included “sharks” Daymond John and Lori Greiner chose as one of the Top 10 from more than 20,000 submitted is just one of the several incredible things that Cuvo says is happening for him.
Best Dam Tape also recently secured valuable shelf space at Walmart.
“There’s been a few awesome things that’s happened recently,” Cuvo said. “The Alibaba.com co-creator pitch competition in Las Vegas was amazing.
Best Dam Tape is described as “any tape that you put around your your hands or your ankles when you’re playing sports,” Cuvo said, adding “We originally started in ice hockey, because I was an athlete my whole life in the sport of hockey.”
His business that currently focusing on hockey equipment and players, will be branching out soon. But knowing hockey as an equipment user himself helped Cuvo develop a better product.
“I found the differences and discrepancies that I saw on the market,” he explained. “I brought (improvements) to real life with my product.”
While beginning with athletic tape, Cuvo promises future expansion of products.
“We’ll do different accessories as well, but it’s mostly going to be rolled up tape,” he said. “We did it originally as a clear tape which goes around shin guards for ice hockey players, to keep their shin guards on, in place. And also the tape that you put on the bottom of the stick as well. We’re looking to keep expanding after that what other applications.”
The list of potential uses for Best Dam tape is endless.
“We really want to be in locker rooms for gymnasts, football players and basketball players,” Cuvo said.
Cuvo hopes to work with West Virginia University athletics soon too, supplying its student-athletes with, well, the Best Dam Tape.
“It’s applicable across different sports, primarily wrists and ankles and securing equipment,” so Mountaineers would potentially gain an edge in their competitions, Cuvo pointed out.
Cuvo’s background as an athlete helps him succeed in business he said, saying that self-motivation, pushing himself and just plain getting things done, that drive bleeds over to his business.
“One hundred percent,” Cuvo confirmed. “That hits the nail on the head. Every day that I trained to be an athlete, it helps me. I take everything that I’ve been conditioned to do my whole life with training and put it all into this.”
The feedback’s been amazing for Best Dam Tape.
“We work with three NHL programs,” Cuvo said, naming the Philadelphia Flyers, Winnipeg Jets and the Anaheim Ducks. “We also are all over the NCAA, as well with Ohio State and a bunch of different schools.”
“To get that validation from the professional guys has been awesome and we’ve been able to secure the trust of many different athletes across different leagues,” he added.
Upon graduation with a bachelor’s in Business Administration (major) and a Marketing (minor) from West Virginia University in Spring 2026, Cuvo said he hopes to grow Best Dam tape into a global lifestyle brand.
“We really want to create a brand that is noteworthy, but also have products that are going to trusted and used by some of the best in the world, no matter what category,” Cuvo stated.
As for the name…
“There’s no “N” on the d -a -m,” Cuvo said with a laugh. “It was really kind of a spur of the moment thing. I wanted to have something that grabbed people’s attention and popped. But I didn’t want the little kids who are fans of our brand saying ‘best dam tape’ – so they’re not saying the bad word.
