CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Members of the West Virginia House of Delegates Judiciary Committee on Wednesday began discussion of a bill that would restore gun rights to nonviolent felons.
House Bill 2618 would “automatically” restore the Second Amendment right of gun ownership to those convicted of nonviolent felonies who have “served their sentence and paid any court-ordered penalties, restitution and fines.”
“My research shows there is about 20 other states that do this in some form or another,” said Del. Chuck Horst, R-Berkeley, the bill’s lead sponsor. “It’s not particularly a novel idea, and I believe it’s something that will help a lot of people get back on their feet. Simply, it comes down to should we be denying a God-given right to somebody because they made a mistake?”
