The Snow Sports Museum of West Virginia (SSMWV) will host a Grand Reopening reception and symposium at their new location; 6459 Appalachian Highway. The event will be Saturday March 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. and feature several members of the SSMWV Hall of Fame sharing their experiences of Snow Sports in West Virginia. Also, SSMWV Board of Directors will share the story of becoming a museum beginning in February of 2018 to the present. SSMWV President Kim Williams said,” We had a series of successful symposiums, but had to stop hosting those events due to the COVID virus in March of 2020. It’s surprising that it’s been five years since we began this journey of developing a Snow Sports Museum”, Williams added.
A group of longtime enthusiasts created the SSMWV in 2018 to document the history of events, places and people to preserve the artifacts that accurately depict Snow Sport activities at every resort in the mountain state. Board of Directors meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at the Museum. The exhibits currently on display at the museum includes the Hall of Fame, Lost and forgotten ski areas, the six different ski areas on Cabin Mt. and much more.
The symposium is just the beginning of a very busy calendar of events in 2023, May 24 the SSMWV will host their annual fundraiser at the new location. In June the SSMWV will partner with the Village Inn to host an afterhours meet and greet reception in conjunction with the Tucker County Chamber of Commerce so members can enjoy two of the area’s business’s.
Also in June, the SSMWV Will host the second annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Black Bear Woods Resort to honor the five newest members of the HOF. Last year’s ceremony featured 21 members of the HOF from 2020 and 2021. COVID prevented the SSMWV hosting the first banquet. In September and October the SSMWV host the second annual HOF Golf Classic at Canaan Valley Resort and Lost Ball Links on High Country Lane in the valley.
