Salem Presbyterian Church is offering a contemplative “Stations of the Cross Art Walk” in its sanctuary during Holy Week.

The sanctuary doors will be open April 3, 4 and 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and also from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 5. The public is welcome. Salem Presbyterian Church is located in downtown Salem at the corner of Main and Market Streets.

This self-guided tour leads participants along 12 stations (images) which move viewers through the events of Holy Week and lead to Easter. Each image has a QR code which offers reflections and devotions for participants as they move from station to station. The church said the tour can take as little as 20 minutes to complete, but participants are encouraged to take their time to look, read and pray their way around the sanctuary.

This art walk features the work of liturgical artist Scott Erickson, who, in his words,  “creates art and moments that speak to our deepest experiences, and illustrate the mystery and wonder of the spiritual journey.”

“These powerful works of art offer us a new opportunity to tangibly experience Holy Week,” the Rev. Chris Vogado, pastor at Salem Presbyterian Church, said. “It’s a time to process the cruelty and injustice done to Jesus on Good Friday. These striking works of art reach us in a way that can move us to consider modern injustice in our world, and invite us to enter the story of Jesus’ passion in a way that goes beyond words alone. The art is not easily forgotten, but ultimately viewing these images will give Easter morning that much more light. We are delighted that Salem Presbyterian Church can offer this to our community.”
