Penn leads Cougars to Win

Jai Penn is fouled on a layup attempt during the win against the Magna Vista Warriors.

Patrick County High School hosted Magna Vista on Senior Night, held Friday, January 28. They were hoping for a win to get a sweep against the Warriors this season. The game was tight throughout, but senior Jai Penn got hot and never cooled down, leading the team to an 84-75 win.

Penn finished the game with 44 points, possibly a school record, with 18 of those points being behind the three-point line. He also had 10 deflections, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 1 block.

“It was a great game. We all came out and executed on both ends of the floor and came out with the win,” Penn said.

Demontez Hill added to the effort by putting up 11 points, 5 deflections, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. David Smith had 10 points, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks, 3 assists, 2 deflections, and 2 steals.

“What a fun game and experience for all of these fans,” said Coach Brian Chitwood. “Great game. We were a little sloppy at times but found a way to do what we had to do to come away with a victory. Our kids fought hard and continued to play hard during times of adversity.

“What an effort by Jai Penn, 44 points! David Smith had a double-double (10 points and 10 rebounds) and 5 blocks to go with that. Demontez Hill had his best game of the season, in my opinion with 11 points. Noah Jessup came in and gave us some BIG minutes. I thought he made a very crucial steal during the 4th quarter, a very pivotal time in the game. This is a game that our young men will remember the rest of their lives. I want to personally thank all of our student body, faculty, staff, community and administrators for coming out tonight and supporting these young men on a BIG moment in their high school basketball careers. Thank you,” Chitwood said.
