ELKINS – The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team traveled to “AAA” Elkins on Tuesday January 31st for a contest with the Lady Tigers. The Lady Mt. Lions pulled away from Elkins in the third and then Tucker County held on for a 59-49 road victory.
The first quarter was back and forth as the Lady Mt. Lions held a slim 13-11 lead after one quarter. The homestanding Lady Tigers fought back in the second quarter to outscore Tucker County 11-10 to make the halftime score 23-22 Lady Mt. Lions.
The third quarter would belong to Tucker County as they pulled away from Elkins after outpacing the Lady Tigers 18-10 to make the score 41-32 after three quarters of play. The Lady Mt. Lions would build a double digit lead in the fourth quarter. Elkins would fight back late in the game, but Tucker County outscored the Lady Tigers 18-17 in the fourth quarter to give the Lady Mt. Lions the road win by the final score of 59-49.
Kadie Colebank led Tucker County with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 blocks. Ericka Zirk added 15 points, 8 rebounds for the Lady Mt. Lions and Macy Helmick chipped in 7 points. Avery Colebank added 7 rebounds for Tucker County in the win. The Tucker County JV team won over Elkins 54-50.
HAMBLETON – The Lady Mt. Lions hosted Sectional foe East Hardy on Thursday February 2nd. Tucker County outscored the visiting Lady Cougars 55-25 after the first quarter to give the Lady Mt. Lions the 64-34 home victory.
Tucker County started the game well as they led 7-0 halfway through the first quarter. East Hardy fought back to tie the game after one quarter 9-9. The Lady Mt. Lions then picked up the offense and defense in the second quarter as they outscored East Hardy 23-7 in the period to give Tucker County a 32-16 halftime lead.
The Lady Mt. Lions continued to score in the third quarter as they outshot the visiting Lady Cougars 19-9 in the third to put the score to 51-25 after three. Tucker County would control the final quarter as well 13-9 to give the Lady Mt. Lions the 64-34 home victory.
The Lady Mt. Lions were led in scoring by Brylee Wetzel with 17 points and Macy Helmick added 12 points, 8 assists. Kadie Colebank finished the game with a triple double as she had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 11 blocks for Tucker County in the win. Addie Hicks chipped in with 9 points for the Lady Mt. Lions. The Lady Mt. Lions JV team got the win in the first game over Buckhannon-Upshur 48-30.
- STORM – The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team traveled to Union on Friday February 3rd for a JV and Varsity contest. The Lady Mt. Lions built an early lead and pulled away for the 67-28 road win.
The first quarter was controlled by Tucker County as they led after one quarter 19-4. The Lady Mt. Lions won the second quarter 13-10 to make the halftime score 32-14 at the halftime break.
Union fought back in the third quarter as they outpaced Tucker County slightly 12-11 to put the score to 43-26 Lady Mt. Lions. The road team Tucker County then responded in the fourth quarter as their defense clamped down to outscore the Lady Tigers 24-2 in the final quarter to make the final score of the game 67-28 Lady Mt. Lions.
Macy Helmick led Tucker County with 15 points, 6 assists and Brylee Wetzel added 12 points. Kadie Colebank had 11 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and Ericka Zirk contributed 11 points, 12 rebounds for the Lady Mt. Lions in the road win. The Tucker County JV also won in the first game 51-5.
Tucker County(14-2) will return to action on Monday February 13th at Pendleton County for a varsity only contest at 6:30pm. The Lady Mt. Lions will then host Tygarts Valley on Tuesday February 14th and then Tucker County will travel to Notre Dame on Thursday February 16th for a varsity only contest at 7pm for the last game of the regular season.
