Patrick County Circuit Court Judge Marcus A. Brinks issued an order signed on Sunday, Nov. 6 removing Sherri Hazlewood from her elected position as Patrick County Clerk of Court.
“The Court finds that the Circuit Court Clerk, by reason of mental and/or physical disability, is unable to perform her duties,” the order stated.
Hazlewood, 54, of Claudville, was arrested twice in less than a week on charges in Patrick and Bland counties.
In the same order, Brinks appointed Deputy Clerk Morgan Boothe to serve as interim Clerk of Court, effective Nov. 7.
“I am very grateful for this opportunity to perform the duties of interim Clerk of Court. I wish nothing by the best for Sherri. She has taught me a lot over the years, and I will continue to pray for her well-being,” said Boothe, who will fill the position until further order of the court.
Boothe said she has worked in the clerk’s office for more than five years. She also has served as the bookkeeper, along with a myriad of other duties, for three years.
“I have been trained on various clerical duties. As I plan to run for Clerk of Court in the upcoming election, I have several new plans and ideas to make this office run more effectively,” Boothe said, and added “the teamwork in this office has been unbelievable these past few months. Everyone is quick to lend a hand wherever it is needed. We all truly care for each other and this office.”
Hazlewood, who is embroiled in several legal issues, was elected to serve the unexpired term of Susan Gasperini, who retired. The term will expire next year.
