FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WV News) — Mon Power and Potomac Edison, subsidiaries of FirstEnergy Corp., filed a 10-year Integrated Resource Plan with the West Virginia Public Service Commission on Wednesday.
The plan proposes keeping the Fort Martin and Harrison coal-fired power stations operational through the next decade, exploring the addition of a 1,200-megawatt natural gas combined-cycle plant by 2031 and adding 70 megawatts of utility-scale solar by 2028.
“Our Integrated Resource Plan reflects a long-term view of the state’s energy future,” said Jim Myers, FirstEnergy’s president of West Virginia and Maryland. “It is the result of careful analysis and planning — designed to ensure we can continue delivering reliable power while supporting economic development and keeping costs manageable for our customers.”
The plan aims to balance three priorities: Keeping energy affordable, ensuring reliable power during periods of high demand and supporting local investment while managing environmental impacts. It also aligns with Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s “50 by ’50” initiative, which seeks to expand West Virginia’s energy capacity to 50 gigawatts by 2050.
