Also at the May meeting, the Eagle Rock Ruritans announced the 2022 scholarship recipients. The following James River High School graduating seniors from the Eagle Rock area were awarded a $1,000 Scholarship each: Starlet Beard, Jacob Hill, Tatum Martin, Janiah Merchant, and Silas Miller. The members of the Ruritan Club wish these students well as they pursue their further education. The scholarships were given from the Kathryn Buhrman, Joseph B. Buhrman, and Sidney Hunter Memorial Scholarship Funds, as well as the Ruritan National Double Your Dollar Fund.
A group of Ruritan members met at the Eagle Rock Community Center on June 2 for a litter pickup in the Eagle Rock area. Barbara Holaday, chair of the Environment Committee, has dubbed the group “The Ruritan Rangers,” and complimented them for their diligence work in helping to make the area appear much cleaner. The “Rangers” are anticipating another cleanup campaign in August. Eagle Rock area residents are encouraged to help in this effort by properly disposing of litter.
As folks pass through Eagle Rock, they will notice that the Eagle Rock Community Center sign has undergone a facelift. The club offers a big “Thank You” to Hazel Bowers for donating her time and talent once again by repainting the sign which was placed at the center by the county approximately 30 years ago.
Several Ruritan members enjoyed a joint picnic and fellowship time with the members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at the Blue Ridge Vineyard this past Sunday, June 5.
As always, the members of the club extend an invitation to others in the area to come and join in theirr efforts to make Eagle Rock and the surrounding area an even better place. The club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Come meet with the Ruitans on June 21 when Matt de Simone, editor of The Fincastle Herald, will be the guest speaker.
