The Eagle Rock Ruritans met at the Eagle Rock Community Center on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. and enjoyed a catered meal from Maw and Paw’s Diner. That date happened to be the birthday of the club secretary Tommy Hunter. The club honored Tommy with a birthday cake and thanked him for his many years of faithful service to the club as secretary. Most of the current members cannot remember any other secretary.
Khari Ryder, Executive Director of the Botetourt County Chamber of Commerce, was guest of the club and also the guest speaker for the program. He shared some of his vision for the Chamber of Commerce and for Botetourt County. Then he gave club members the opportunity to share their vision for Northern Botetourt County. Several club members expressed the desire to see an expansion of the Ruritan Club’s LEAP and Feeding America initiatives, which began in October 2021.

Club President Beth Leffel continues to work diligently toward the Eagle Rock Ruritan Club-sponsored Science Fest to be held at the Blue Ridge Vineyard on May 13. Briefly stated, there are three main objectives: 1) Students (or anyone) involvement– doing a science experiment and displaying it at the Fest. 2) Small businesses with a STEM or Ag focus– having a table with interactive display and/or demonstration. 3) Family Fun– enjoying such activities as ax throwing (not real axes), bounce house, nature walk, and the like.
The Finance Committee is planning a Take-Out-Only Fish Fry in the near future at the Community Center. For this first fundraiser since the pandemic, the number of tickets will be limited to 200.
As always, the Ruritans invite others in the area to come and join them at the Eagle Rock Ruritan Club as they seek to live out the club motto: “Fellowship, Good Will, and Community Service.” The club meets each third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
