Board discusses Governor’s program

The Patrick County School Board discussed Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s ‘Our Commitment to Virginia’s Children’ program at its Dec. 8 meeting.

The Governor’s ‘Our Commitment to Virginia’s Children’ program was discussed at the Dec. 8 meeting of the Patrick County School Board.

Schools Superintendent Jason Wood said the program is part of the governor’s new initiative to focus on learning loss.

“Action step seven requires all schools to re-engage the public. So, we’ve already had one parent advisory meeting this fall, and we have another one scheduled next week, and we have a student leadership meeting next week,” he said.

Wood said a meeting with the Extension Office and 4H about before and after school learning will also be held “because they are already partners with us in that grant.”

The Special Education Committee and the Early Childhood Education Committee will also send out information and look for feedback on better ways to use the remaining funds.

“If there is any stakeholder who has an interest in the school system and how we’re spending our ESSER funds, please reach out to me. Because I know it’s great to resolicit information, maybe there’s a project or program that we can add. We’re open to suggestions,” he said.

In other matters, the board:

*Approved the personnel report as amended.

*Approved the consent agenda.

*Discussed updates to the school’s ESSER III grants.

*Discussed the Virginia School Board Association (VSBA) Capital Conference attendance.

*Approved the board’s 2023 meeting schedule to be the second Thursday of every month.

*Approved the VSBA IIA and IIAB to go into effect in January.

*Discussed the Special Education Inclusive update to be presented in January.

*Approved the surplus sale of iPhones.

*Discussed the new School Board building.

*Discussed the upcoming fiscal year 2024 budget season.
