MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Berkeley Springs recently earned ninth in Best Historic Small Town in the USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice Travel Award Contest, an award that reflects the longstanding history of the town dating back to significance before George Washington.
Laura Smith, administrative assistant for Travel Berkeley Springs, the visitors center in town, said that Berkeley Springs is “rich” with history.
“Beginning with the Indians that came and camped at the springs, and George Washington was a part of the original surveying group for the town and was here quite a few times, and he owned property here,” Smith said.
