Adcock seeks third term to town council

Adcock seeks third term to town council

Rebecca Adcock is seeking a third term on the Stuart Town Council in the November election.

Rebecca Adcock is seeking reelection to the Stuart Town Council in the November election.

If she is victorious, it will mark her third term, said Adcock, 42.

Adcock is one of three candidates in the effort to fill three vacant council seats. Terry Dalton also is seeking another term. Jeff Houchins is seeking a first term.

She decided to run again because she’s still trying to work to create a better community and town.

“I’m excited with the new town manager (Bryce Simmons), the different avenues we could look at and what possibilities we could do for the town,” she said.

Throughout her tenure on the board, Adcock said she’s most proud of maintaining a balanced budget and the normal, everyday things “like the amenities the town offers with water and sewer, garbage pick-up.”

While she’s also proud of the work accomplished on the Stuart Farmers’ Market, Adcock believes there’s still some work that needs to be done.

“I want to hopefully work to get a cover on the amphitheater there. Right now, it’s just a concrete slab for the stage, so having some permanent covering on that back part to be able to do more events,” she said.

Adcock also wants to help work on the town’s comprehensive plan, a Downtown Revitalization Project, and pursue some of the town’s other goals.

While the majority of the projects will be funded by grants, Adcock said some town funds could be used.

“The town’s been very fortunate in our financial aspect over the last few years, and we look forward to continuing that and hopefully having a little bit of extra money to be able to do some of the projects,” she said.

Because she gives more than lip service to transparency in government, Adcock said she believes residents should be included in the decision-making process, especially with the town’s comprehensive plan and the many public input meetings.

“Of course, everyone is always welcome to come to our council meetings, they are open to the public, and ask any questions then,” she said.

Adcock has a B.S. in Environmental Studies, with a minor in Outdoor Education and a M.A. in Animal Science. While she’s worked as the executive director of the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce since 2017, Adcock previously worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She also served as an adjunct instructor for Patrick & Henry Community College (P&HCC), worked for Activate Martinsville, and the YMCA in Martinsville.

In her free time, Adcock enjoys spending time in the community and at home, running, crafting, and reading.

She and her husband, Jonathan, have been married since 2008. He currently works as the medical director of the Foothills Pet Healthcare Clinic in Mount Airy, N.C.
