Motor vehicle office wait times in the commonwealth fell to 8.3 minutes in 2026 from about 37 minutes in 2019, according to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, making access to essential government services faster and more convenient for drivers.

Virginia lawmakers previously directed analysts from the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, the state’s monitor for government agencies, to assess DMV performance. Analysts found that the DMV’s average wait time at its high-volume offices was around 34 minutes in fiscal year 2014, compared with the DMV’s 20-minute target.

As a result, analysts recommended that the DMV develop a plan to reduce wait times at high-volume customer service centers and also reduce telephone and call center wait times.

House Transportation Committee Chair Karrie Delaney, D-Fairfax, said the reduction is a positive development for the commonwealth, as it streamlines processes and benefits those who require DMV services.

“I think it’s pretty good—great news for everyone in the commonwealth,” said Delaney. “I know that, for many of us, when we have an administrative task that requires a trip to the DMV, it’s often met with a groan … but to know that the people of the commonwealth are going to be able to get in quickly, get out, and conduct their business—I think that’s something we hope to raise awareness of, since it’s such great news for everybody.”

The department has reduced wait times by nearly 80% since 2019, following the 2023 launch of the Perfect 10 initiative, which aimed to keep waits to 10 minutes or less.

“While we’ve seen great success with the implementation of ‘Perfect 10,’ customers with appointments experience even shorter wait times,” said Camila Knight, a DMV spokeswoman.

Knight said the agency improved customer flow through redesigned lobby layouts, separate appointment and walk-in lines, employee guidance tools and center-specific solutions. Expanded appointment availability at 74 centers statewide also improves the experience, with Virginia drivers praising the improved flow online.

Jake Steinman posted online that his visit to a DMV office in Charlottesville was “impossibly fast” two months ago.

“I have waited half a day at DMVs even with an appointment scheduled,” he wrote. “Very lucky to live in a (place) that has an efficient DMV and friendly staff.”

As a result of the work and other customer service tweaks, Knight said the agency received the 2026 Best Strategic Business Transformation Program award at the Business Transformation World Summit. Knight said wait times have remained below 10 minutes since last year, with some variation across centers.

The winning entry, entitled “Transforming a 100-Year-Old Agency,” illustrated that the Virginia DMV’s changes resulted in $15 million in savings, a cut in customer wait times, an 8% reduction in employee turnover from fiscal year 2024 to 2025, strong customer satisfaction ratings statewide, and a record low wait time of 5.9 minutes in October 2025.

Knight says the department continues to reduce wait times. To help, visitors should make appointments on the agency’s website by searching “appointments.”
