HUNTINGTON — The Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District will host its annual Patriot Day ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Spring Hill Cemetery.
Patriot Day is an annual observance to honor the memory of the victims killed in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The ceremony will include remarks from Judy Roebuck, who was a Red Cross volunteer and spent 83 days in New York City following the attacks. Other speakers include Dr. Ken and Sharon Ambrose, GHPRD Board President Alan Morrison, Huntington Fire Department Chief Christopher Blanton, Huntington Police Department Chief Phil Watkins and Huntington Mayor Patrick Farrell.
The ceremony will also include a moment of silence, rifle volley and patriotic music. Light refreshments will be provided after the ceremony.
The Healing Field
GHPRD’s Healing Field has returned and is on display through Sept. 14 at Spring Hill Cemetery. The Healing Field serves as a patriotic vigil to the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
People can purchase a flag for $35 at Spring Hill Cemetery. The proceeds will benefit the Spring Hill Cemetery Memorial Bell Tower Fund. Previously posted flags held by the owner can be re-posted for $15 and retrieved on Sept. 14.
Before the Healing Field is taken down on Monday, the two days prior will be reserved as Days of Reflection. Participants are asked to get their flags on Sept. 14 before 4 p.m.
