These are some of the scenes encountered by motorists traveling U.S. 58 on Sunday. The photos, by Stephen Wood, were taken before emergency personnel arrived at the scene.
A tractor-trailer lays on its side, the undercarriage visible. Debris from the trailer litters the road and shoulder.
“We could smell brakes before we even started down the (Lovers Leap) mountain,” one of the travelers said, and estimated the crash occurred around 11:30 a.m.
Wood, like many others near the incident, walked to the crash site to offer aid.
A short video, also by Wood, is posted at www.theenterprise.net.
The Virginia State Police did not return a call for comment before deadline.
