Young ladies continue to recycle with purpose for the Library

Cheyanne Bell sits on the first new bench at the New Castle Library, which the young ladies received for the plastics they turned in to the recycling center.

By Pam Dudding

While some wonder what is happening to our younger generation, there are many young people who are doing things to preserve our world. Who knew that soft plastic bags could be made into a usable and sturdy bench?

The young high school ladies responsible for this wonderful effort are Kallie Fisher, Kammie Fisher, McKenna All and Cheyanne Bell. Plastic is stuffed into garbage bags, and they are being stored in Stacey Fisher’s barn.

Three months ago, these girls started collecting plastics to try and collect enough to send to the recycling center for a new bench for the New Castle Library.  With much effort and work, they were able to do so, “collecting 500 pounds of plastics,” Librarian Director Letha Persinger shared. “Plus they had to separate and weigh it all.”

This seemed to spark a fire within them as they chose to keep collecting and now have enough to take to the recycling center to get a second bench for the Library.

Marge Lewter is the transport person who takes the bags to the recycling center, where they get monetary credit for a new bench that will be given to the library.

Fisher added a special “thank you” to Food Country for saving the plastics for them and allowing them to pick up from their stocking and order days and to the New Castle Library for being a collection point. Community members have really pitched in to help this feat become real for the second time and the ladies are excited to have completed this task, yet again.

Who knows–maybe they will start collecting more plastics for benches on Main Street? (hint hint!)
