HAMBLETON – The Mt. Lions Boys’ Basketball team hosted the Co-Regional Championship game against Tygarts Valley on Wednesday March 9th. The Bulldogs put up a good fight, but Tucker County pulled away in the second half to take the victory 58-43. The win clinched a spot in the State Tournament for the second year in a row for the Mt. Lions.
The first quarter was tight in scoring as Tucker County held a slim 13-12 lead after one quarter of play. In the second quarter the game continued to close in scoring as Tygarts Valley outpaced the Mt. Lions in the quarter 11-9 to make the score 23-22 Bulldogs at the halftime break.
Tucker County then pulled away in the third quarter as the Mt. Lions outscored Tygarts Valley 22-8 in the period to give Tucker County the 44-31 lead after three. In the fourth quarter the visiting Bulldogs fought back, but the Mt. Lions held off Tygarts Valley to capture the win 58-43. The win allowed Tucker County to advance to the WV Boys’ State Tournament on March 15th.
The Mt. Lions were led in scoring by Haden Wamsley with 19 points and Ashton Lycliter added 17 points, 9 rebounds. Tucker County’s Levi Bennett also had 10 points and Maddox Anderson chipped in with 8 points, 6 assists in the Mt. Lions win.
Tucker County (23-2) earned a #3 seed in the State Tournament and will face #6 Pendleton County on Tuesday March 15th at 9:30am in Charleston. The winner of this game will advance to the Semi-Finals on Thursday March 17th at 11:15am against the winner of #2 Man and #7 Greater Beckley.
