Springwood Food Pantry open on Jan. 16

Botetourt County History for Jan. 13 Edition
[SUBMITTED PHOTO]

Pictured is a large earthenware jar with scored decorations. The clear glaze is partially worn off and it has two flat handles for lifting. In the mid-19th Century, Botetourt County was known for its concentration of earthenware manufacturing sites. They were researched by Kurt C. Russ through the Laboratory of Anthropology at Washington and Lee University and published by the Department of Historic Resources in 1990. Russ’s findings indicate this jar was made by the Pete M. Obenshain family, which operated in the Mill Creek area from 1850-1880. Yvette B. Beheler donated this artifact to the Botetourt County Museum where more information can be found.
