On Sunday, August 18, the Annual Old Salem Church Homecoming will welcome everyone in the community to join in a potluck and afternoon of fellowship. The potluck is at 1 p.m. and the service message, expected to start at 2 p.m., will be given by the new pastor of New Castle Christian Church, Sheldon Cosma.

Although there are no Sunday or Wednesday services and the lot is empty most of the time, there are still two annual events where locals pack Old Salem Church on Route 42 in Craig County to attend. People love that the building only holds standing room events.

Jean Bradley and many friends and relatives help to keep this tradition alive.

Olde Salem Church was established in 1883, and the first Christmas Candlelight service was held in December 2001.

Ever since, just one Christmas has been missed, and that was due to bad weather.

The church hosts two annual events that garner a lot of community support: a homecoming picnic in the summer and a Christmas Candlelight service in December. “We continue this because it seems so many would be disappointed if we didn’t,” Bradley said.
